10 Fast and Free Security Enhancements

Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (_http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates); have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate (_www.sygate.com) and ZoneAlarm (_www.zonelabs.com) offer free versions.

3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware," April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy (_http://security.kolla.de). SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

Why Good Discs Go Bad

Ever wonder what makes a disc bad? Here's why they vary in quality, and why you should worry about the discs you've entrusted with your data.

Burning CDs and DVDs is the easy part.

Knowing your data will be there when you go back to it days, months, or even years later--well, that's a bit harder. Not all discs are created equal, as Fred Byers, information technology specialist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, can attest.

Byers is part of a team heading up an independent study of DVD media quality. Based on the first wave of testing results, the situation is murky at best.

"We've found the quality varies, depending upon the type of dye used to make the write-once discs and [on the] the manufacturer," reports Byers. Even discs from the same manufacturer, with the same brand, can test differently, Byers adds. "But there was more of a significant difference when you compared discs between manufacturers," he explains.

DVD Media Quality: The First Tests

In the first phase of testing, completed late last year, NIST focused on the most popular media: write-once, single-layer DVD-R and +R discs. Rewritable discs will be tested in the second phase, slated to start this fall. An interesting footnote to the study's methodology: NIST uses media purchased off store shelves and via Web sites; and while researchers are tracking the media by brand, they are not tracking the specific factory source of the media tested. For example, a given manufacturer's discs could originate from different production lines, which could account for a variation in disc quality by the same manufacturer.

Yahoo Messeger, no add's
I went into the system registery and found out that Yahoo! moved the 'banner url' key to a slightly different location. Than what it used in version 9!

Yahoo! IM no longer uses 'YUrl', but uses 'View' instead. You gotta click on each key inside of 'View' and edit the 'banner url' string to anything you want... I simply cleared mine out completely and it works flawlessly!

Here is what you gotta do:

Run regedit
Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Yahoo -> Pager -> View

Scientific and technological progress is rapid change even adaptirovavÅ¡ijsâ everything people can't get used to many things. For example, I still remember what a miracle to me seemed normal "penek, which then, in the 90 's, was unattainable benefit. As have some devices that are already I have (for example, a robot vacuum cleaner — go after him during cleaning are bound, so it's interesting), but with some little realizes their reality, wondering what kind of technical genius of seemingly ordinary people who created the whole thing. But let's leave all these santimenty. The fact is that SanDisk has released a new miracle, tiny SSD drive up to 64 gigabytes. This is not a memory card and integrated into the motherboard PC or schema of any mobile device chip is virtually impossible takes place.

H-1B Visas for U.S. students

Washington: H-1B visas are a large source of scholarship money for US students, with H-1B training and scholarship fees levied on each petition (and renewal) having funded more than 53,000 math and science college scholarships for U.S. students through the National Science Foundation, said U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Slamming the critics of H-1B, a U.S. think-tank and corporate America have suggested removal of Congressional cap on this popular work visa programme and allow markets to determine number of skilled foreign workers eligible to work in the country.

"The best policy for the U.S. is one that sides with freedom and innovation, not restriction. It is a policy where the H-1B cap is either eliminated or set high enough that we can let the market decide on the number of new skilled foreign nationals who work in America each year," a report said.

The 81-page report titled "Regaining America's Competitive Advantage: Making our Immigration System Work" has been jointly prepared by U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which is the top representative body of the American businesses, American Council on International Personnel, an eminent think-tank.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday signed into law a new 'Border Security Bill' proposing a steep hike in some categories of H-1B and L-1 visa fees which is expected to badly hurt Indian IT firms which may have to shell out an additional $250 million annually for the next five years.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Typekit’s launch. It’s been an unbelievable 12 months of growth and learning, not just for us but for webfonts, web design, browser development, and so much more. And we can’t think of a better way to mark this moment than to announce one of our most exciting partnerships to date.

Adobe and Typekit are teaming up to bring some of the world’s most popular, recognizable, and respected fonts to the web. Starting today, you’ll be able to use classics like Adobe Garamond, News Gothic, Myriad, and Minion plus many more on your website — all of them newly optimized and hinted for the screen.

We’ve been using these fonts internally here at Typekit for a few weeks and the quality is simply amazing. These are the original cuts of the celebrated typefaces you’ve been waiting for, not reproductions or knockoffs of their designs. That means you can use them with the assurance that your creative work is being presented with all the accuracy and technical detail the print world has known for decades.

The Adobe type team has put a lot of work into these fonts, bringing their years of experience with type and staying focused on the best practices for the web. In addition, they have also made fonts available at every Typekit account level. You can even use Adobe Garamond with our free Trial plan! Have a look through the collection. Be inspired. Create beautiful work.

If you don’t yet have a Typekit account, it only takes a minute. Sign up for full access to thousands of fonts here. For even more details, see the announcement on Adobe’s blog.
